Bilateral Trade Peru - Japan 

Nowadays, the trade with Japan has grown and diversified; creating new business opportunities. In the last five years, the bilateral trade has been increasing with an annual rate of 8.5% but in 2007, it achieved US $ 2.9 billion, 61% more than 2006. The trade balance has showed a positive tendency with a difference favorable to Peru. Furthermore, the Peruvian exports to Japan have achieved the record of US $ 2.2 billion, 79% more than 2006. 

This growth is calling the Japanese investor’s attention. The diplomatic approach and the starting of talking to sign trade agreements open many possibilities to be taken account.  

Japan is the fourth most important market of Peruvian exports. The bilateral trade is not limited to traditional sectors as Mining and Fisheries, but it is diversified to other areas like Agribusiness, Manufacture and Services. There are multiple business opportunities to produce export products with added value.  

Successful cases of Peruvian products within the Japanese market are frozen and processed Giant Squid, Eel, Snail, sea urchin, shark wings, among others; Into the Textile sector there are cotton and alpaca apparel and knit products; and Food industry have gotten success with camu camu, maca, organic bananas, asparagus, dry onion, giant corn from Cusco, which has Appellation of Origin. Finally, the Services area is concentrated in tourism area where Machu Picchu and Nasca Lines stand out as the most visited spots by Japanese tourists.
